As promised, the pics of my winter works !
First, engine removal: at this stage the cowling must be removed first, continue with air box and carburetors. Electrical wiring is disconect. For an easier engine remounting, I've made the choise to remove the drive shaft.
Engine is down: the first thing to make is cleaning ( with white-spirit for ex. )
I started with the rear cylinders: cylinder-head cover is down, and the oil lower case too. The two camshafts must be remove very carefuly, due to the absence of any bearing ( cast-iron on aluminium ) and after removal of the cam chain tensioner. You can see the camshaft chain, and valve pushers. it's important to place all the parts on reserved bench, in the order of disassembly. All the parts must be replaced at his original place.
Here, I've removed the pushers.
Cylinder head is down. You can see in the box on the left side: one piston with its connecting rod and pin, the heigt pushers and cylinder head nuts ( in order of removal ). I've disconected all the oil delivery pipes and the plastic water jacket joint.
The responsible of my troubles ! The exhaust valves, covered by dust, due to the seals failure.
On the right side: as removed. Left side after cleaning and polishing.
At this stage, a valve lapping is necessary: 8 hours for the 8 valves. After a very nice cleaning, control of the springs and guides, I'd remounted all of it ( with disulfide-molybdene grease on each stem ). For testing the sealing, I've turned the cylinder head with admission on the upper side, and I've filled each with white-spirit : like that you can inspect the valve ( if it's moist arround the valve head, repeat all the valve lapping. If it's dry, the valve is seal ). repeat for the exhaust side .
I've change the pistons rings, pins and chamshaft chain, here in place. On the pic below, you can see the new cylinderhead gasket. I've repainted the crankcase.
The rear cylinder head had taked its place. Two principals stages here: camshaft adjustement, and valve clearance adjustements. I've remounted the exhaust pipes ( impossible to make with engine in the frame ).
We continue with the front cylinders. You can see the dust ( very black and oil moist ) on the pistons: compare to the upper pics ( pistons cleaned ).
The engine ready to go in the frame, and for new "ventures" !
80 hours, 4 liters of white-spirit, 1 liter of acetone, 310 euros of parts ( pistons rings x 4, pistons pins and clips x 4, cylinder-head gasket x 2, camshaft-chain x 2, valves seals x 16 ) and few beers ...
Many thanks to: Doc, for the service manual, Noel for the adress of Buckeye Perf., and Buckeye Perf's staff. And my wife for her patience ...
